What is the easiest food to grow at home?

We hope that the worst-case scenario never happens, but if it does, you’ll need to start growing your own food. So what is the easiest food to grow at home?

Fava Beans

Fava or Broad beans are one of the easiest vegetables to grow.  Fava beans are a cool-weather annual vegetable, planted in either the early spring or fall. They are grown mostly for the large, flat edible seeds found inside the fruiting structures (pods).

Carrots

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a compound your body changes into vitamin A, which helps keep your eyes healthy. And beta-carotene helps protect your eyes from the sun and lowers your chances of cataracts and other eye problems. Yellow carrots have lutein, which is also good for your eyes.

Plan carrots directly in the ground, they are not meant to be transplanted. Sow the ground 1/4 inch deep, and 2 to 3 inches apart. Once you plant your carrot seeds, keep the soil moist with frequent shallow waterings.

  • Avoid amending the soil with nitrogen-rich material such as manure and fertilizer, which can cause carrots to fork and grow little side roots. Instead, work in old coffee grounds.
  • If your ground soil is heavy clay or too rocky, you should consider planting carrots in a raised bed at least 12 inches deep and filled with airy, loamy soil (not clay nor silt).
