What is the first thing you need to build your own self substainable community

Before you can build anything you need land to build it on. But not just any land would do.

The first question you need to ask is, how many homes will be in your community?

Will it be just your family or will there be more?

If it is going to be just your family then you only need more than an acre of land.

For a single family, you will need a half-acre of crop rotation. You will want to have enough room for things like potatoes, peas, cabbage, carrots, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes. The big issue though is growing your own wheat. That’s going to take a lot of space, but we’ll get more into wheat later on, in another post.

Size isn’t the only issue you need to consider.

The perfect land will also have natural water sources. No matter where you live, water is essential to survive.

Sure you can collect rainwater but it’s not something you can depend on and it’s not going to be enough.

You can dig a well but what if the pump breaks? That could be an issue. You need to consider also how you are going to sanitize and maintain a well.

You want to look for land with springs, lakes, and rivers.

Your ideal solution is to find a piece of land with a natural spring. That way your family would have a clean, abundant source of fresh water.

Now throw in a free-flowing river and a small pond or two on the property and you’ve got the best of all worlds.
